[ 30 NM, 1 hour 45 minutes ]
We‘ve reached that time in our trip that the end is far closer than the start. The trip home is coming fast and a need to start making our way south can't be ignored. Our destination for the day was Prideaux Haven, specifically Melanie Cove & Laura Cove, and our first trip into Desolation Sound Marine Park. No swings or slides, but definitely amazing that the views and environment could be even better than the previous days. We sat in 85 degrees with 70 degree water and mountain tops still covered in snow.
We read and were told that this area is one of the most popular spots to visit. Its islands create many bays and interconnecting coves for exploration. Lucky for our early season travel, there were very few people out. We chose Melanie Cove for its central trail locations to walk to Laura Cove, Unwin lake lookout, or Tenedos Bay. When we arrived it was at low tide and the dinghy tie up spots were a ways out from being reached, so we opted to dinghy ride through the area. As negative as I have felt about our alternative mode of transportation, it was a pretty wonderful way to see the park, watch a seaplane land (for what must have been a lunch break), and then take back off.
The day got warm quickly and we opted to call it good enough with the ride through the coves, cutting out the trails. We couldn't keep the pups cooled down and I'm too nervous to push them when they start panting too much, since French Bulldogs have an inability to regulate their temperatures. The kids spent time on the paddle board, we grilled hotdogs, and took in the serenity.
It seems we need to balance the natural beauty with the walk in civilization for the kids. It was requested that we dock in Lund for the night. I wasn't opposed to the idea of skipping cooking. Lund is a nice harbor, with three restaurants, and a decent market to do some small provisioning. We had two choices of restaurants to eat at for dinner. The first, in The Lund Hotel, was out of most things from a grand reopening, except for fried food. With the temps, it just wasn't sounding palatable. It was so warm outside, and inside the restaurant, we decided to enjoy a beverage and try The Boardwalk Restaurant. A sign was placed at the entrance that they needed to close early due to the heat and conditions of the staff. Understandable, but darn. As life turned out, a taco salad made in an air conditioned boat was the best ending.
Nancy's Bakery was to be our breakfast spot before heading out, but Nancy too was having staffing woes and was not open for the days we were in the harbor. Off we go to cook our own food.
