Sea Ray Saturday on Hood Canal

Writer: Jaci BryantJaci Bryant

With what always feels like a rarity, Dave and I found ourselves with a Saturday that had no previously planned engagements. We set out launching our recently acquired 1989 16’ Sea Ray at the Salsbury boat launch to find some lunch on the Hood Canal.

Options being limited, we made a 30 nautical mile cruise to Pleasant Harbor to put eyes on the marina housing many of our Poulsbo Yacht Club members for the month (and get some advertised “healthy” pizza).

Pups were along for the ride and Pleasant Harbor dining is Fido friendly at the lower outdoor patio. There was an upper deck that they couldn’t join on, but staff warned us of a heavy bee concentration. An Overboard pizza sans olives with a beer (and hard kombucha) from the combined market store made for a great weekend lunch spot.

We left our Brinnon al fresco lunch spot for aimless cruising. Dave directed us to a lagoon looking entrance at the tip of the Coyle Peninsula. We had found Fisherman’s Harbor. He was excited to test the shallow traveling abilities of our vessel and shallow he found! Tides were moving to our advantage, but it was a high possibility we would be beached on oyster beds while also surrounded by water.

A little bit of drifting and momentary motoring had us cruising into some mildly deeper waters. Fisherman’s Harbor provides some rustic waterside structures and ends at a community dock. It was a super special spot that we were both pleased to have stumbled (or waded) into.

In the spirit of exploration, we exited out of the 6 knot flooding harbor in search of a Port Ludlow spit holding a neighborhood. Bridgehaven is a community of close neighbors back to back and side to side. The homes facing the canal enjoying the water view and their counterpart benefiting from personal docks in their theoretical backyards.

If you squint, maybe it is like the canals of Venice in Italy …or really nothing like them at all. It did look like residents who were enjoying there water filled lifestyle.

Dave is the best at finding the fun in whatever we are doing. Whether it’s pretend property hunting in a town we are vacationing in or making best friends with the adjoining table, he is a fan of a weekend adventure. I secretly appreciate his allergy to home and making sure I have new stories to share.
